The Way of Tea did not begin in the form we know today.

Its origins can be traced back to China, where tea was first consumed as a medicinal drink.

Later, in Zen monasteries, tea came to be used to help monks remain awake during zazen and to support their spiritual practice.

At that time, tea was not prepared in front of guests. It was made behind the scenes and simply served to those gathered.

As tea culture developed in Japan, practices such as tōcha (tea-tasting competitions) and shoin-cha (formal tea gatherings in reception rooms) became popular.

Tea evolved into a culture that appreciated fine utensils and distinguished tea leaves.

A significant turning point came with Jukō Murata , who shifted the focus of tea from the utensils themselves to the people who shared the experience.

Jōō Takeno this spirit further, cultivating a style of tea that valued simplicity and quietness over luxury and display.

Sen no Rikyū then transformed the practice once again by making the very act of preparing tea a shared experience between host and guest.

The host boils the water, prepares the tea before the guests, and together they share the moment in which a single bowl of tea comes into being.

The emphasis is no longer on displaying beautiful utensils, but on creating a space where people genuinely meet one another.

Looking back at the history of the Way of Tea, its evolution was not simply about changing the method of preparing tea.

Rather, it was a gradual transformation in what the culture of tea chose to value.

This is why every movement in tea practice still carries meaning today.

Rather than performing a movement simply because it is a prescribed form, understanding why that form came into being transforms its significance.

Learning the form is important.

Understanding the reason the form exists is even more meaningful.

From that point onward, the Way of Tea becomes a deeper and richer journey of learning.
