花は心の静謐 "Flowers Are the Stillness of the Heart"

「花は心の静謐」

ある先人が残したこの言葉を心に留めています。

茶道では、「花は野にあるように」と教えられます。

意匠を凝らすのではなく、野に咲いている姿そのままに生ける。

それが茶花です。

一見すると、それは自然らしく生ける技法のようにも思えます。

しかし、本当に大切なのは、花の姿ではなく、その花が場にもたらす働きなのではないでしょうか。

野の花は、自分を美しく見せようとはしません。

誰かに評価されるために咲いているわけでもありません。

ただ、その時、その場所に、静かに在ります。

だから茶花も、飾り立てることなく、そのままを生けます。

亭主の技術を見せるためでも、作品をつくるためでもありません。

花を通して、「そのまま在る」という姿を場に迎えているように感じます。

「花は心の静謐」という言葉は、花そのものを表しているのではなく、花に触れた人の心を表しているのではないかと思います。

花は何も語りません。

何も教えません。

ただ、そこにあります。

その姿に触れるとき、私たちの心もまた、少しずつ静まっていきます。

茶花は、季節を伝えるためだけのものではありません。

床の間を美しく飾るためだけのものでもありません。

その場にいる人の心が自然と静まり、その時の自分に静かに還っていく。

その働きを、何も語らずに果たしている存在なのだと思います。

茶室には、掛物があり、道具があり、一碗のお茶があります。

その中で茶花だけは、ただ静かに命をそこへ置いています。

そして、その姿は「こうありなさい」と語ることなく、「そのままで在る」ということを教えてくれているように感じます。

These words, left to us by one of the great tea masters, have remained with me.

In the Way of Tea, we are taught:

"Arrange the flowers as they are found in the field."

A tea flower is not arranged as an artistic composition.

It is placed as though it were still growing naturally in the wild.

At first glance, this may seem to be simply a technique for creating a natural-looking arrangement.

Yet what truly matters is not the appearance of the flower, but the quiet presence it brings into the tea room.

Wildflowers do not try to make themselves beautiful.

They do not bloom to be admired or praised.

They simply exist—quietly, in their own place, at their own time.

For this reason, tea flowers are never arranged to impress.

Nor are they intended to display the host's skill or become works of art.

Through the flower, we welcome into the tea room the quiet presence of something that simply is.

To me, the phrase "Flowers are the stillness of the heart" does not describe the flower itself.

Rather, it describes the heart of the person who encounters it.

A flower says nothing.

It teaches nothing.

It simply exists.

And when we quietly meet its presence, our own hearts gradually become still.

Tea flowers are not there merely to express the season.

Nor are they simply there to decorate the tokonoma alcove.

Their quiet presence gently allows those in the tea room to become still and return to themselves.

Without saying a single word, they fulfill that role.

Within the tea room there is a hanging scroll, tea utensils, and a single bowl of tea.

Among them, the tea flower alone simply places its life within the space.

Without telling us how we should be, it quietly reminds us what it means simply to be.
