In the Way of Tea, there is a phrase that is deeply cherished:

Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku (Harmony, Respect, Purity, and Tranquility).

It is often explained as:

Wa – Harmony

Kei – Respect

Sei – Purity

Jaku – Tranquility

These are, of course, essential principles of the Way of Tea.

Yet, the longer I have continued my practice, the more I have come to see them from a different perspective.

The same tea room.

The same utensils.

The same tea preparation.

The same movements.

And yet, the atmosphere of the gathering is never the same.

Why is that?

It is not because the movements are different.

It is because the person revealed through those movements is different.

No matter how carefully we perfect the outward form, our way of being naturally reveals itself through every gesture.

The way we walk.

The way we bow.

The way we handle a tea bowl.

The way we welcome our guests.

None of these is sustained by technique alone.

They quietly express who we are in that moment.

Perhaps, then, Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku is not something to be acquired through effort.

Rather, it is something that naturally appears when our way of being is reflected in the gathering itself.

Harmony is not created by trying to be harmonious.

Respect does not arise simply by trying to act respectfully.

When our way of being is settled, people, utensils, the space, and the seasons naturally begin to resonate with one another, and harmony quietly emerges.

When our attention rests wholeheartedly on each encounter, that attitude is expressed through our movements.

A clear and unclouded heart is gently reflected in the space itself.

And when all of these come together without effort, tranquility naturally fills the gathering.

To me, Wa-Kei-Sei-Jaku is not something to attain.

It is the quiet expression of who we truly are in that moment.
