What Is Passed Down

In recent years, I have seen more and more tea teachers whom I have known since childhood retire due to age or illness.
From time to time, they entrust me with cherished tea utensils and kimono, saying,
"If they come to you, they will continue to be used."
I feel deeply grateful each time this happens.
Tea utensils are not something to be acquired and simply owned.
Over many years, they have passed through the hands of countless hosts, welcoming guests from one generation to the next, until they have arrived where they are today.
They have never belonged to just one person.
Rather, they have been handed down through the accumulated time and care of many people.
Within each utensil rests the quiet history of welcoming guests, preparing a bowl of tea, and treasuring every gathering.
My teacher owned many tea utensils and often said,
"These utensils have simply found their way to me. I am only looking after them for now."
Those words have stayed with me.
Tea utensils do not remain with one person forever.
They spend time with one owner, then quietly continue their journey to another.
In this way, they have traveled through decades and even centuries.
They seem to carry within them the living tradition of tea that has been passed down through time.
A bowl of tea exists only in that single moment.
Yet the utensils that support it continue to be used across generations, passing from one pair of hands to another.
One-time encounters, and time that is continually passed on.
Both quietly live within the Way of Tea.
When I hold a tea bowl or a tea scoop, I feel that I am touching more than the object itself.
I am also touching the time of those who have cared for it and used it with respect throughout the years.
One day, I too will pass that time on to someone else.
Tea utensils exist not merely to be inherited as objects.
They exist so that, through them, the living tradition of tea may continue to be passed from one person to the next.
