なぜ茶道では扇子を置くのでしょうか The Folding Fan: Creating a Place Before Words

茶道では、扇子は欠かすことのできない道具です。

しかし、茶道の扇子は暑さをしのぐために使うものではありません。

実際には、開くこともほとんどありません。

では、なぜ扇子を持ち、挨拶の前に静かに前へ置くのでしょうか。

一般には、「一線を引くため」「結界を表すため」と説明されることがあります。

もちろん、その意味もあるのでしょう。

けれどその一線は人と人を隔てるためのものではないように感じています。

扇子を置くことで生まれるのは、距離ではなく、敬意です。

近づきすぎることもなく、遠ざかることもなく、お互いを大切にするための静かな間合いが生まれます。

茶道では、挨拶をする前にまず扇子を置きます。

言葉より先に、場が整えられます。

「こんにちは」と声を交わす前に、すでに亭主と客は一つの場をともにしています。

扇子は、その始まりを静かに知らせているように思います。

扇子は「境界」をつくるものというより、「場」を生み出すものではないかと感じています。

一本の扇子が置かれることで、それまでの日常から茶の湯の時間へと静かに移り変わっていきます。

そこでは、所作も言葉も、お互いへの向き合い方も、少しずつ変わっていきます。

茶道では、一つひとつの道具に役割があります。

扇子もまた、ただ持つための道具ではありません。

人と人とのあいだに、目には見えない敬意をそっと置くもの。

そして、その敬意が静かな場を生み、その場の中でその時々の私が自然にあらわれてくるように思います。

In the Way of Tea, the folding fan is an indispensable utensil.

Yet it is not used to cool oneself.

In fact, it is rarely, if ever, opened.

Why, then, do we carry a folding fan and quietly place it before us before offering a greeting?

It is often said that the fan marks a boundary or symbolizes a sacred space.

There is certainly truth in that understanding.

Yet I do not feel that this boundary exists to separate one person from another.

What arises when the fan is placed is not distance, but respect.

Neither too close nor too far away, it quietly creates the proper space in which two people can meet with mutual regard.

In the Way of Tea, the fan is placed before any words are exchanged.

Before we say, “Hello,” the space itself has already been prepared.

Host and guest are already sharing the same place.

The folding fan seems to quietly announce the beginning of that shared moment.

To me, the fan does not create a boundary so much as it creates a place.

With the simple act of placing a single folding fan before us, everyday life gently gives way to the world of tea.

Within that space, our movements, our words, and the way we face one another begin to change.

In the Way of Tea, every utensil has its own purpose.

The folding fan is no exception.

It is not merely something we carry.

It quietly places an invisible gesture of respect between people.

And from that respect, a tranquil space is born—a space in which who we are, in that very moment, can naturally reveal itself.
