小間 The Small Tea Room

「なぜ茶室はこんなに狭いのだろう」と思われる方が少なくありません。

特に利休が大切にした二畳の小間は、必要最低限とも思える広さです。

しかし、この二畳という広さは「狭い部屋をつくろう」と考えて生まれたものではありません。

その背景には、「どのような場をつくりたいのか」という茶道の考え方があるように思います。

利休以前の茶の湯は、広い書院で行われることが多く、名物の道具や掛物を鑑賞することも大切な楽しみの一つでした。

一方、利休は茶の湯の中心を、道具から人へと移していきます。

そして、人と人が一服のお茶を通して静かに向き合うためには、どのような空間がふさわしいのかを問い続けました。

その答えの一つが、小間でした。

二畳という空間には、余計なものを置くことができません。

飾るものも限られます。

広い空間では意識がさまざまなものへ向かいますが、小間では自然と、一服のお茶と私へ意識が集まります。

「集中しなさい」という教えではありません。

空間そのものが、自然とそのような働きを生み出しているのです。

茶道には、一つひとつの形に理由があります。

その理由を知らずに覚えると、作法は「決まりごと」になります。

しかし、その形が生まれた背景を知ると、作法は自然な意味を持ち始めます。

一服のお茶を通して静かに向き合う。

その場を追い求めた結果として生まれた一つの答えのように感じます。

Many people wonder, “Why is a tea room so small?”

The two-mat tea room, especially the one cherished by Sen no Rikyū, seems to be no more than the minimum space required.

Yet this size was not chosen simply to create a small room.

Rather, it reflects a deeper question at the heart of the Way of Tea:

What kind of space allows people to truly meet one another?

Before Rikyū, tea gatherings were often held in spacious shoin reception rooms, where appreciating treasured utensils and hanging scrolls was an important part of the experience.

Rikyū gradually shifted the focus of tea from the utensils to the people who shared a bowl of tea.

He continued to ask what kind of space would best allow host and guest to meet each other quietly through a single bowl of tea.

One answer was the small tea room.

Within two tatami mats, there is little room for unnecessary things.

The objects placed in the room are few and carefully chosen.

In a large space, our attention naturally moves in many directions.

In a small tea room, however, it quietly settles on a single bowl of tea—and on ourselves.

This is not because we are told to concentrate.

Rather, the space itself gently invites that way of being.

In the Way of Tea, every form has a reason.

When movements are learned without understanding their origin, they can feel like nothing more than rules.

But when we understand why those forms came into being, they begin to carry a natural meaning.

To share a single bowl of tea in quiet presence.

Perhaps the two-mat tea room was born as one answer to that simple yet profound aspiration.
