SENSHINAN ・ THE WAY OF TEA
Lesson Information
Carefully performing each and every action

About the lessons
Learning the Forms, Becoming Aware of Ourselves in Each Moment
At Senshinan, we offer careful instruction in the Omotesenke tradition of Japanese tea ceremony, from the fundamentals to tea preparation, traditional movements, the handling of tea utensils, and seasonal arrangements.
As we repeat each movement with care, we may begin to notice subtle movements within ourselves that often go unnoticed in everyday life.
Alongside learning traditional procedures and the use of tea utensils, we value the time spent becoming aware of these aspects of ourselves.
What We Explore in Practice
Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience, you can learn at your own pace.
01
Basic Movements
Walking, sitting, and bowing in the tea room.
We carefully learn the traditional forms that have been passed down through generations, one movement at a time.
02
Tea Preparation
We practice the traditional sequence of preparing and serving tea, beginning with the fundamentals.
Beyond learning the individual movements, we also become familiar with their natural flow.
03
Tea Utensils and Seasonal Arrangements
Through practice, we learn about tea bowls, tea caddies, and other utensils, as well as seasonal flowers and the art of arranging them together.
Even in the Same Practice, Who We Are in Each Moment Is Never Quite the Same
The traditional forms of tea ceremony preserve movements refined to eliminate what is unnecessary.
As we move within this flow, we may become aware of subtle movements within ourselves — a sense of hurry, tension, or a moment of hesitation — that we often overlook in everyday life.
Learning the techniques of tea ceremony and becoming aware of ourselves in each moment are both part of our practice.
