About Senshin-an

At Senshinan, we teach the Omotesenke tradition of Japanese tea ceremony.

The Way of Tea has forms and practices that have been passed down through generations.

As we carefully repeat each movement, we may begin to notice subtle movements within ourselves that often go unnoticed in everyday life.

Even when we practice the same forms, who we are in each moment is never quite the same.

Alongside learning the traditional procedures and the use of tea utensils, we value the time spent becoming aware of these aspects of ourselves.

In stillness, each person's journey naturally deepens.

We hope Senshinan can be a place where this unfolds.

Lesson Information

We offer instruction in the Omotesenke tradition of tea ceremony, from the fundamentals to tea preparation, traditional movements, the handling of utensils, and seasonal arrangements.

Whether you are new to tea ceremony or have previous experience, lessons are guided at your own pace.

Those who wish may also pursue formal certifications in the Omotesenke tradition.

There is no dress code, and all necessary tea utensils are provided.

Lessons are currently held on a flexible schedule, and you are welcome to attend one session at a time.

For first-time visitors

We invite you to step away from the bustle of everyday life and enjoy a quiet moment in the tea room.

No previous experience of tea ceremony is necessary.

You can experience the atmosphere of Senshinan while we introduce you to our approach to practice.

Afterward, if you wish, we can discuss how you might like to continue learning.

Words used in the tea ceremony

A bowl of tea, seasonal flowers, and traditional gestures passed down through generations.

In the tea ceremony, there are things that can be seen through form.

This blog is about things I encounter during my tea ceremony lessons, as well as the history of the tea ceremony, the tools used, the flowers, and the language used.
